Frequently Asked Questions

We love to share our knowledge. Here are some quick answers to a few of the most common questions people ask us. Call us today – we've got answers to your heating system questions.

There are many things to consider in selecting the right furnace for your home to maximize your comfort and heating efficiency. Most furnaces are fueled by natural gas, propane, oil or electricity. Though your choice might be dictated by where you live, efficiency is the number one factor to consider when selecting a furnace. Furnaces today now have Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) ratings to help you select a furnace rated as “high efficiency.”

The size of your furnace is another key factor. This involves matching the heat output, measured in British thermal units (Btus), with the size of your house and balancing the heat output with the ductwork in your home to ensure it will force enough hot air throughout the system to heat your entire home.

If you want to be absolutely sure you are selecting the right furnace for your home, call on the experts. A heating professional will help you select the correct size of furnace for your home based on fuel selection, furnace location and the size of your home. Even more importantly, a qualified, licensed HVAC contractor will make sure your furnace is installed properly to avoid costly service calls down the road.

A traditional room thermostat lets you control the temperature in your home using a wall-mounted dial or control panel. Many models do include programmable temperature settings to enhance comfort while saving energy, however newer technologies offer even more features.

Wi-Fi-enabled Smart thermostats give you more efficient and accessible control over your heating system by letting you remotely control your home's temperature via a smartphone, tablet or desktop computer.

There are many models of wireless thermostat systems available, from basic models to those offering more advanced technology and options. When used properly, they provide the ability to heat your home more efficiently and save you money in the long run. Not sure where to start? Ask your Long heating professional to help you choose a model that will fit your needs.

Though people seem to be talking a lot about radiant heat lately, it’s far from new. A simple fire in a fireplace produces radiant heat as does a wood stove, portable electric heater, electric quartz heater, radiators connected to a central boiler, etc.

Although many people still use traditional wall or baseboard radiators, it’s possible to have a radiant heating system totally invisible with all the piping hidden in floors or ceilings. The newer systems supply heat directly to the floor or to panels in the wall or ceiling of a house, depending largely on radiant heat transfer – the delivery of heat directly from the hot surface to the people and objects in the room via infrared radiation.

Though radiant heat systems can be costly to install in an existing home, once it’s up and running, a radiant system can be up to 30 percent more efficient than forced-air heating, depending on how well insulated a house is. Radiant heat is nearly silent, it’s clean, it’s comfortable and there are no ducts to clean. Additionally, radiant heat offers the ability to zone your house, allowing you to control the temperature in each zone base on your needs.

If you’re considering radiant heating for your new or existing home, let a professional heating expert talk you through the pros and cons to help you decide if this is a good home-heating option for you.

The best way to keep your furnace functioning efficiently is to keep it properly maintained. When a heating system malfunctions, it’s generally related to one of three components: the heat source, distribution system or thermostat.

The Internet is bursting with DIY articles outlining steps for furnace maintenance and troubleshooting. If proper safety measures are taken, this can be manageable for some homeowners. If you want it done correctly and don’t have the time or interest in learning to do it yourself, we recommend having your furnace professionally serviced once a year. In addition to cleaning, lubrication and leak inspections, a qualified furnace technician will look for and prevent the biggest culprits of furnace issues from causing your heating system to fail or work inefficiently.

Catching problems early can keep your family comfortable and prevent more costly repairs later. Call the professionals at Long Mechanical Service to schedule your furnace maintenance before the next heating season.

And don’t forget to change your disposable furnace filters regularly (we recommend monthly throughout the heating system). Be sure to use the correct size and type of replacement filters to ensure proper air filtration, which not only keeps your furnace running cleaner (helping it to last longer), but also cuts down on dust and allergens in your home.

If you’re like most homeowners, you're concerned about controlling your energy bills but still want to maintain comfort in your home. Managing your thermostat settings can be tricky, especially if you have a one-zone heating system spanning your entire home.

A programmable thermostat is a good option, with most models able to automatically adjust the temperature in your home up to six or more times per day. The installation of a wireless “smart” thermostat is another alternative. (See above)

If you’ve tried everything and still can’t find the right settings to balance the temperature in different rooms of your home, you may want to consider having an HVAC professional assess your home’s heating system. Changes to your ductwork, thermostat placement or room zoning systems may allow you to fine-tune your system and provide you with both optimum efficiency and comfort.
